Middle School SS Newsletter & Activities April 10-21, 2017
Geography – 6
th Grade will begin their study of Europe this week. Monday will have an overview of the physical features of the continent and a look at resources and climates. The first area of study will be Southern Europe where we will examine Spain, Portugal, Italy, Malta, Greece and the Mediterranean Islands. We will also begin our research and planning for the European Festival which is scheduled for April 21.
World History – 7
th Grade begins their study of the Renaissance and Reformation this week. We will examine events from the Medieval Times and see how they led to the Renaissance and look at the impact of the Renaissance on Europe and the World. Students will also start preparations for the Renaissance Faire which is scheduled for April 21.
US History – 8
th Grade will close out our study of Reconstruction by finishing the PBS video Reconstruction: The Second Civil War. We have had some really good discussion during the video about the social history of our nation during this difficult transition time. We will take a quick look at the Real Wild West and then begin a unit on the Roaring Twenties that will include the Radio Broadcast and the 1929 New Years Eve Soiree.
Activities
Drama Club – Check your calendars because Drama Club will be meeting often to prepare for the Spring Play. Rehearsals are scheduled for 4/10, 4/11, 4/18, 4/19, 4/24 – 4/27. Crew members will begin work on sets and costumes on April 10. The Play is scheduled for the 2
nd week of May.
KJHS – KJHS is busy planning the Annual Downtown Scavenger Hunt. Students in grades 4 & 6 participate in the Hunt and 8
th grade students perform role plays at various sites and act as guides to the groups. This years event will be an all day affair that will have several special site visits as well as the Scavenger Hunt. The Scavenger Hunt is scheduled for May 10. Look for more information to come home to parents in the next couple of weeks.
Student Council Officer Elections – Nomination forms for Student Council officers will be available in Mr. Myers’ room beginning on April 12. Nominees will turn in forms by April 19 and give campaign speeches on April 20 after Mass. Primary elections will take place in homeroom on April 25 narrowing fields to two candidates for each office. The General election will take place on May 9 in homeroom. Instructions for campaigning will be given to candidates on April 18 before the speeches on April 20. Students in grades 5 – 7 are eligible to run for offices.
Budget Ball – The April Budget Ball match will take place on Thursday April 20 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM in the GSS Gym. Students in grades 5 – 8 are welcome to join the fun.
Aegean Service Club – Aegean Service will meet on Fridays April 21 & 28 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM. Recycling and outdoor trash pickup will be on the agenda as well as sorting lost and found items and school uniforms.
GSS Press Corps – GSS Press Corps will meet on Fridays April 21 & 28 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.
Creative Writing – Creative Writing will meet on Mondays April 10 & 24 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM in the Computer Lab.
Y-Club – Y-Club will meet on Wednesday April 12 from 2:30 3:00 PM to tally service hours.
