Middle School SS Newsletter & Activities December 5-9, 2016
Geography (6th Grade) - We will finish off many things this week. The last 2 World Maps will be presented on Monday. Thursday we will take an exam on the Geography of SE Asia after reviewing on Wednesday. Friday will be a day for landmark presentations and playing the Where in the World Game.
World History (7th Grade) - We will finish our material on the Ancient Chinese Dynasties this week. Tuesday we will watch a video on the Terra Cotta Warriors and the history behind the 1974 find. We will review and be ready for a Monday exam next week and then take a quick look at Christmas Around the World.
US History (8th Grade) - We will be working on what lead to the formation of our American government and the Constitution the next two weeks. This is probably the most important information you will learn this year – your rights and responsibilities as US citizens.
Activities
Vintage Gaming Club – Vintage Gaming Club will meet Monday December 5 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM. The Super Nintendo and Intelivison with Intelivoice will be featured at this meeting.
Math Counts – Math Counts will meet Monday December 5 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM in Mrs. Jones room/
KYA – KYA will meet on Tuesday December 6 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM. We will concentrate on speech writing, parliamentary procedure and campaigning at this meeting. We have but one more meeting before our trip on December 15 – 17 to Louisville.
Y-Club – Y-Club will meet on Wednesday December 7 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM. Members will be sorting donations to the Head to Toe Clothing Drive and chart service hours for the club and the school for the months of November and December.
Academic Team – Academic and Quick Recall teams will meet on Wendesday December 7 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM in the Spanish Room.
Student Council – Student Council will meet on Thursday December 8 from 2:30 – 4:00 PM. Members will be creating Christmas Cards, addressing and stamping for delivery to parish members who are homebound or in hospital care during the holidays. The annual Christmas Party will take place at the end of the session with members taking part in a Secret Santa.
Aegean Service Club – The Aegean will meet Friday December 9 from 2:30 – 3:30 pm. Projects will include some work at the church and creating Blessing Bags for the Homeless here in Franklin County.
KJHS – KJHS is sponsoring its annual art contest and the theme this year is Christmas in Kentucky. There are four divisions – Preschool 3 & 4, K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. Entries can be on any background, posterboard, craftpaper or whatever your creative minds come up with and must be submitted to KJHS by December 13. Judges will award 1
st, 2
nd and 3
rd place ribbons for each division. Below are the topics and criteria for each division.
Preschool – Choose one of the 3 coloring pages and color in your best Christmastime style.
K-2 – Make a picture of Santa visiting a typical Kentucky landmark such as Rupp Arena, Kentucky Horse Park, Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace or Mammoth Cave. Make sure to give it a wintery and Chrismaslike touch and don’t be afraid to be creative.
3-5 – Make a picture showing Christmas traditions from your home and those we share in Kentucky. Examples might be how we decorate our homes, events we attend during the season, activities your family shares and Christmas morning at home.
6-8 – Make a mosaic using cut pieces of construction paper of Christmas Around the World. Ideas may come from the way people celebrate Christmas anywhere in the world and can have a religious or secular theme.
Film Club – Film Club will be viewing the Christmas Classic
The Lemon Drop Kid on Monday and Tuesday December 12 & 13.
National Geography Bee – The school wide Geography Bee will be held on December 14 at 1:00 pm in the PLC. Two finalists from grades 4-8 will compete for school champion and the chance to qualify for the state contest in the Spring.
Middle School Christmas Bowling Trip – The Middle School will be heading off to the annual Christmas Bowl at Capital Bowl on December 15 from 9:15 to 12:00. Permission slips will be sent home on Friday December 9 and should be returned to homeroom teachers along with the $12. 00 fee by Tuesday December 13.
GSS Press Corps – The Press Corps has been on a break, but will return in January.
