Geography 6th grade - We begin with lessons from the book this week after we finish work on our world maps. The maps will be used for our landmark projects and will give us a sense of where to find places on Earth. The last of the first round of Landmark presentations will be on Friday. Our first unit from the book will focus on the features of the Earth and how they impact our lives.
World History 7th Grade – First, we will finish the Game of Life and write our essays on alternatives, choice and opportunity cost. Next, we will begin our study of World History by examining Stone Age Man. We will look at how civilization develops and the role of innovation in our history. We will also take a stab at duplicating some Stone Age rock and cave art.
US History - We will be starting out study of the English Colonies this week. There are lots of interesting things to take special looks at. To that end, we will watch a video on the Lost Colony of Roanoke on Monday and Tuesday and a video on the Salem Witch Trials on Friday. The videos both come from the Discovery Channel and provide some fascinating information on the subjects.
Clubs and Organizations
Aegean Service Club – The Aegean Service Club will meet Monday September 12 from 2:30 – 3:30. The Aegeans are available to help teachers and staff members each week and also accept school or parish wide projects, such as the clean up of the Memorial Garden and Outdoor Classroom. GSS Press Corps – The Press Corps will meet Monday, September 12 after school from 2:30 – 3:30. The Press corps finalized their first broadcast of the year and it will be available to teachers this Monday.
KYA – KYA students will meet from 2:30-3:30 PM on Tuesday September 13. Scholarship forms are due by October 20 and registration fees and forms are due by November 3. This year’s conference is December 1-3 in Louisville.
Investors Club – Investors Club will have the kickoff meeting to the 2016 Portfolio Challenge this Wednesday September 14 from 2:30 – 3:00 PM. Students in grades 6 – 8 are welcome to come join and compete.
Budget Ball – September’s Budget Ball match will take place on Thursday September 15. The match is scheduled for the GSS gym from 2:30 – 3:30. Last month’s match was very close with a score of 47 – 44. Students in grades 5-8 are welcome to join in.
KJHS – KJHS will hold its officer elections on Friday September 16 at the regular meeting. Plans for the 2
nd Annual Kentucky Art Contest will be discussed as well as plans to attend the Convention in November.
Y-Club – Y-Club will hold its officer elections at the September 21
st meeting. The club will be discussing the We Day program and service opportunities;
Student Council – Plans for the Back to School activity have almost been finalized. Look for announcement on Monday as to the time, date and information on activities.
Vintage Gaming Club – Vintage Gaming Club members met for the first official meeting on Friday September 9. Members examined and played games on a Coleco single game unit, GameBoys and original NES system – the Techmo Bowl Football was a popular closer as the Raider’s and Bo Jackson defeated the Dolphins and Dan Marino 14 – 0.
Drama Club – Drama Club will be on hold until December when members will prepare a short play for the holidays. The main production will be in the Spring with rehearsals beginning the 2
nd week of March.
Film Club – Film Club will meet on September 22 & 23 this month. This month’s theme is Law and Order.
